Move Like You
I consider it a great privilege to share the ancient wisdom of yoga with anyone wanting to feel physically, mentally, and emotionally strong, graceful, and resilient as we navigate life both on and off the mat.

I, like you, am made up of so very many experiences, interests, stories, and people, but perhaps the two most beloved details of who I am are that I am a New Yorker and a yoga teacher. I was not born either of these, but the writing was on the wall from a young age that I was destined to be both. Dreams of moving to NYC began when I was in elementary school and I rarely imagined life anywhere else. I began yoga in high school when my ballet teachers would allow us to skip technique class (gasp) on Saturday mornings in lieu of taking a yoga class before rehearsals. I lived for Saturday mornings. As a dedicated ballet dancer, my adolescence was filled with passion, movement, music, and expression, but also the feeling that I was never enough- ballet is a cut-throat world no matter how “good” you are. I specifically remember a yoga teacher saying at the start of one of my early classes, “You being here is enough.” Those were healing words to a broken girl.
Some say college, Marymount Manhattan College to be exact, brought me to NYC; I say NYC brought me to college. I exhausted every yoga studio's “first-time student” deal in an effort to practice yoga on a student budget. Post-college, I began working at a gym where I realized the perks of free yoga classes! For me, yoga was my safe space. It was the one hour a day where I felt I belonged. Perhaps the only time in my life I had ever felt “good enough,” and it had nothing to do with my physical capabilities.
After living the NYC starving artist life for several years, in 2011, I embarked on my first yoga teacher training. Since then, I have continued to learn from incredible mentors, most notably among many, Alanna Kaivalya and Tiffany Cruikshank.
On the first day of yoga teacher training, we were asked why we were there. My response was “I can’t explain it, but whenever I take a yoga class I am just a better person. I am more confident, more calm, more patient, more trusting, more okay. I want to crack the code and I want to share that with as many people as possible.” This is still my mission. While I haven’t cracked any codes, I have studied the brilliance of this ancient philosophy and the depths of what yoga offers. I consider it a great privilege to share/ teach/ and translate this with anyone who wants to feel physically, mentally, and emotionally strong, graceful, and resilient as we navigate life both on and off the mat. That, and to remind each of you that just being here, is not only enough, but it is my greatest honor.
I teach group classes as well as privately one-on-one. As a former personal trainer and professional dancer, my education and experience are deeply rooted in functional anatomy and teaching students how to properly and effectively move their bodies. The miraculous healing benefits of breathwork and meditation fuels much of my teaching. My first love is Vinyasa, but I also teach restorative yoga, myofascial release, power yoga, and slow flow with a vested interest in spine health. My goal is not to teach you to imitate my poses and understanding of the practice, but rather to help you to discover how the teachings of yoga are most applicable to your life.
"I have been practicing yoga for more than 10 years. Since I travel quite a lot, over the years I have arranged to have private yoga sessions with teachers in various parts of the U.S. and several cities around the world in order to keep fit and flexible while I am on the road. i have worked with Mary Horne for more than a year, both in private sessions and in a class at the Equinox gym, and she is clearly among the very best teachers I have ever worked with — anywhere. Mary brings an extraordinary level of skill and thoughtfulness to our practice. She creates the right level of challenge — not extreme but sufficient so I can continue to improve and feel like I am being challenged. Mary is creative and intuitive, and she adapts well to situations when I am feeling sleep deprived or when I have occasional injuries. I have found a number of times that I started practice feeling tired and ended it feeling highly energized. With her talent, knowledge, high energy level and sense of calmness, I have benefited tremendously from working with Mary and would recommend her to anyone who is interested in working with an outstanding yoga teacher."
